• He briefed the TC on his responsibilities.
• Technical Achievement Award nomination due September 15, 1999

Subcommittee Reports

 

            Handbook – Terry Cornell Chair

• Revised handbooks received
• Next revision for 2003 handbook, with final draft by March 1, 2003
• Five key items

1. Develop checklist separate from Table 1
2. Evaluate changing the terms from "owning cost" to "capital costs" in next revision
3. Update Maintenance Cost Data
4. Update estimates of service life (Table 3) (may require research project)
5. Consider changing ‘Service life’ to "useful life" or "economic life"

• Terry expressed thanks to the Handbook subcommittee for participating in the review process. He also expressed appreciation to Dave Guckelberger, previous chair of this subcommittee for chairing a significant portion of this effort.

            Research – Joe Watson Chair

• Draft Final Report #2 of RP 929 – HVAC Maintenance Costs by ADM Associates was received for the research subcommittee meeting on June 20m 1999. Taghi Aleriza and Don Dorman from ADM presented the report.
• The Research subcommittee will be reviewing the findings and conclusions made by the contractor. Their preliminary findings and conclusions were discussed at the subcommittee meeting; however a teleconference is to be set up through Kirk Bond to discuss these in more detail due to the late arrival of the document and the lack of time for review by the subcommittee. A recommendation for acceptance, or return to the contractor, is expected no later than the next committee meeting in Dallas, TX in February, 2000.
• As a part of the contract a formal presentation via a Technical or Symposium paper to an ASHRAE audience by ADM will be prepared highlighting the findings of the report.
• Incoming Research Chair for Research, Terry Cornell, will be collecting and analyzing data in the ASHRAE Handbook to address what may be confusing and/or outdated data. Continued emphasis will be provided to updating data in tables in the chapter for maintenance, operating cost and service life information. It is unlikely that research will be completed in time for next revision of chapter 35.

            Next Steps:

                       

• It was recommended that a specific request for information on HVAC Maintenance Cost be made to major entities such as BOMA, to expand the results of RP929 (ADM report) findings.
• A suggestion was made to get some organizations other than ASHRAE involved in service life studies (cost shared) since many firms outside ASHRAE are using life tables,
• Seminar #40 with four papers (Service Life Issues and the Appropriate Use of Service Life Data) on 6/23/99 will discuss some of the issues which are frequently needed by our professionals who use Chapter 35 of the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals.
